Ideas in Development

Rural Entrepreneurship

Microenterprises and small businesses make up the majority of the economies of rural communities. There is a growing understanding that economic development strategies founded primarily on business recruitment are not in rural America's best interests and that there needs to be a greater emphasis on homegrown development.

CFED believes that entrepreneurship is a critical piece of rural economic development and promotes its development through research and innovation, policy efforts, and field development strategies.

Funded by the W.K. Kellogg and Annie E. Casey Foundations, this work is led by Kim Pate.
